Wildelia Nancy Roman

What is your Background and How did it all start?

Born in Puerto Rico, moved to Bronx NY at 5 years old and to Troy NY in 1972. Fluent in Spanish.

What do you want people to know about you?

Love working with kids and seniors. Lived at Kennedy Towers for 13 years and have been the Tenant Commissioner of the THA for 4 years.

What inspired you to get into your line of work?

Bringing my second son to Head Start, I was asked to translate because I am bi-lingual.

What qualities make a great leader?

Outgoing, friendly, honest, kind. Listens to concerns and works to address them.

What do you look for in future employees in your field?

Love the kids you are working with, some of them don’t have that love at home with parents always being at work or on their phone. Be gentle. If they won’t eat don’t force them, ask them to try a little bit and take smaller steps.

If you could meet anyone from the past or present, who would it be? And why?

CEO former Executive Director Karen Gordon. Grew the head start program from 2 classes to multiple programs throughout Rensselaer County what it has involved into now.

A key figure to your professional or personal development / career path – and why?

Josselyn Ryan and Mary Jane Conners my best friends of over 40 years.

What would you say to your younger self?

Move to a warmer climate. Visit Puerto Rico more… last time I was there 5 years ago. I have the opportunity to go to Santo Domingo and Punta Cana for a wedding.
