What is your Background and How did it all start?
Born in the Bronx, lived in Queens, Upper West Side. Graduated Yorktown High School and RPI for Architecture.
What do you want people to know about you?
39 years as Architect for TAP and their non for profit community design center. Enjoys existing building conversions to make an outdated building useful again. Board Commissioner of the THA for 4 years.
What inspired you to get into your line of work?
Common 1st degree, everyone can relate to buildings, home, school, shopping all take place in a building. Love for math and art.
How do you balance projects, work load and supervising staff?
Keep a schedule for efficiency, be realistic about your goals, don’t overpromise with deadlines.
What qualities make a great leader?
Good listener, ability to delegate and build a team.
What do you look for in hiring future employees?
Flexibility, willing to learn especially new technology, materials and software. Engaged and looking to succeed.
If you could meet anyone from the past or present, who would it be? And why?
Michelle Obama is a great model as first lady.
A key figure to your professional or personal development / career path – and why?
Joe Fama: Great mentor, thoughtful, saved 1 building at a time. Great attitude about clients and the community. Visited the state and city hall re: issues in zoning and ordinance. Ability to see the big picture.
What would you say to your younger self?
Be nimble. Everything you do and love is valuable. Your talents and interests will come into play.
Encouraging message:
Pay attention. Attention to detail is important. Take the initiative to do more and do better. Don’t just do what you are told. Be engaging.
